I made the pink gingham dress from The Barbie Movie
You’ve probably seen an advert or to for The Barbie Movie and the thing that I as most excited about it the fashion.
The film features a range of references.
Some of my favourites are the swimming costume which is a reference to the first Barbie released in 1959 with the idea of people buying additional clothes instead of additional dolls.
And the skate set I saw which reminds me of Barbie dolls from the 80s and early 90s. Those maximalist patterns and surge of digital software to create 2D graphics and CGI really did breed these iconic patterns.
Get to the dress
So onto the gingham dress. I decided to make this because I was gifted a vintage 60s I think dress that was in the perfect pink gingham.
So how to I turn this shift dress into the more fit and flare style? Reducing the fullness in strategic places.
After cutting the dress in half, I relied on the four square pockets and shortening the skirt to garner some fabric to add to the skirt.
If you want to see me doing this you can watch my tutorial here.
I found some barbie sets to take photos with. Special thanks to the sales assistant who kindly took photos of me and was very lovely.
I love this acid yellow and pale pink colour combination.
I have a really strong arm, I just realised.
I hope this encourages you to go ahead to upcycle and have fun with fashion.
